LIFE And The Power of Your Environment
By Oluwole Solanke PhD, FCIB

“Show me your friends, and I will show you your future.” — African Proverb
“You cannot live a positive life in a negative environment.” — Joel Osteen
“If you want to fly with eagles, don’t swim with ducks.” — T. Harv Eker
Life is a journey of choices, opportunities, and influences. While talent, intelligence, and determination are essential ingredients for success, one often-overlooked factor shapes our destiny more than we realize, our environment.
Your environment is not merely the place where you live. It includes the people you associate with, the conversations you entertain, the books you read, the information you consume, the workplace you belong to, and even the values that surround you. Whether we acknowledge it or not, our environment quietly molds our attitudes, habits, ambitions, and ultimately, our future.

Many people pray for success while remaining in environments that continuously produce failure. They desire excellence but tolerate mediocrity. They dream of prosperity while surrounding themselves with pessimism. Such contradictions make lasting progress difficult.
Environment: The Silent Architect of Destiny
Every seed carries tremendous potential, but no seed can flourish in the wrong soil. A fertile seed planted on barren ground struggles to survive, while an average seed planted in rich soil often exceeds expectations.
Human beings are no different.
The environment either nurtures potential or suppresses it. It either inspires greatness or encourages complacency. It either rewards integrity or normalizes corruption. It either stimulates creativity or kills innovation.

As motivational speaker Jim Rohn wisely observed:
“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
Whether this statement is taken literally or figuratively, its message remains profound. The people closest to us influence our thinking, our standards, our confidence, and our aspirations.
The Company You Keep Matters
There is a timeless saying:
“Bad company corrupts good character.”
No matter how disciplined a person may be, prolonged exposure to negativity eventually leaves its mark.
Spend enough time among chronic complainers, and gratitude begins to disappear.

Associate constantly with dishonest people, and integrity starts looking foolish.
Remain among visionaries, hardworking individuals, and people of character, and excellence gradually becomes your own habit.
Association is rarely neutral; it either elevates or diminishes.
Institutions Reflect Their Environment
This principle extends beyond individuals to families, organizations, educational institutions, businesses, and nations.
A workplace that rewards competence, transparency, and accountability naturally attracts productive people.
Conversely, an institution where favoritism, intimidation, and corruption become normal eventually drives away excellence while promoting mediocrity.

Culture is simply the environment repeated consistently over time.
Great organizations deliberately create environments where honesty is protected, innovation is encouraged, teamwork is celebrated, and performance is rewarded.
Your Mental Environment Is Equally Important
Not every environment is physical.
Some of the most dangerous environments exist within the mind.
Continuous exposure to fear, anxiety, bitterness, jealousy, and hopelessness gradually weakens confidence and limits achievement.
Likewise, filling the mind daily with knowledge, wisdom, gratitude, faith, and positive thinking builds resilience and emotional strength.

As Henry Ford famously said:
“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.”
Our inner environment often determines how we respond to the external one.
Sometimes Growth Requires Relocation
One of life’s hardest decisions is recognizing when an environment has become too toxic for growth.
This does not always mean changing cities or countries. Sometimes it means changing friendships, habits, routines, workplaces, or even limiting exposure to negative influences.
An eagle does not apologize for leaving the ground. It was created for higher altitudes.

Likewise, people who aspire to greatness must sometimes leave environments that continually limit their potential.
Growth often begins where comfort ends.
Becoming a Positive Environment
While choosing the right environment is important, becoming the right environment for others is even more powerful.
Be the colleague who encourages.
Be the leader who inspires.
Be the parent who nurtures.
Be the teacher who ignites curiosity.
Be the friend who speaks hope.

Every positive word, honest action, and compassionate gesture contributes to creating an atmosphere where others can flourish.
The greatest environments are built by people who consistently choose character over convenience.
Practical Lessons
- Carefully evaluate the people who influence your daily thinking.
- Invest in books, knowledge, and continuous learning.
- Distance yourself from persistent negativity and destructive habits.
- Build relationships with people who challenge you to improve.
- Create a home and workplace where integrity, respect, and excellence thrive.
- Remember that changing your environment is often the first step toward changing your life.

Final Reflection
Life does not merely happen to us; it also happens around us.
Our surroundings silently shape our dreams, beliefs, behaviors, and achievements. While we may not control where life begins, we can often choose the environment in which our future develops.
Choose environments that strengthen your values, expand your vision, sharpen your abilities, and encourage your purpose.
When the environment changes, possibilities expand.
When possibilities expand, lives are transformed.
And when transformed lives come together, families, institutions, communities, and nations become stronger.
In the end, your environment may not define your beginning, but it will significantly influence your destination. Choose wisely.
